POSITION STATEMENT FROM THE
HEALING TOUCH INTERNATIONAL BOARD OF DIRECTORS

                                            Responses to questions [VIEW...]

Healing Touch International continues to fully operate and provide service to the public, membership, and certified practitioners and instructors.  The Healing Touch International Board of Directors continues to uphold its duty as offices of a not-for-profit service organization. HTI has not, can not and will not be relinquishing any of their assets, services or the mechanisms required to provide its services to anyone.

The following information is offered to help you understand Healing Touch International’s position, value and structure.

Purposes of Healing Touch International
Healing Touch International was incorporated as a non-profit professional membership organization in March, 1996 for, but not limited to, the following purposes:
  • Provide continuing education for nurses, health care professionals and others in the energy based therapy of Healing Touch
  • Promote research of Healing Touch
  • Provide certification of Practitioners and Instructors in Healing Touch
  • Provide community education of energy based therapies
Healing Touch Certificate Program
The Healing Touch Certificate Program was developed and owned by AHNA until 1996. AHNA’s Healing Touch Certificate Program included:
  • The name “American Holistic Nurses’ Association’s Healing Touch Certificate Program”
  • Healing Touch Certificate Program Terminal Objectives for HT Levels 1-5
  • Healing Touch Certificate Program Course Content for HT levels 1-5
  • Healing Touch Certificate Program requirements for completion of the certificate program and to be eligible to apply for certification.
In 1996, this became Healing Touch International’s Healing Touch Certificate Program and included all of the above.  From that point forward, AHNA began endorsement of Healing Touch International’s Healing Touch Certificate Program.

Healing Touch Certification
The certification for credentialing Healing Touch Practitioners and Instructors was developed by AHNA in 1992 and administered by AHNA from 1993-1996.  In March 1996, it was given to Healing Touch International, Inc. and transferred intact utilizing the same certification board, criteria, application packets, sequencing of certificate numbers, and credential identities Certified Healing Touch Practitioner (CHTP) and Certified Healing Touch Instructor (CHTI or CHTP/I). The identified certifying body was changed from AHNA to Healing Touch International.

It is customary for certifying organizations to provide continuing education for its members and the public. Two examples of large membership organizations that follow this procedure are the Healthcare Financial Management Association and American College of Health Care Executives.  It is also an accepted practice to offer discounted application fees for certification to individuals who are members of an organization in order to encourage members to become certified and thus increase expertise of the membership body.

Healing Touch International, Inc. certification can only be offered through Healing Touch International.  It can only be renewed through Healing Touch International.  The credentials Certified Healing Touch Practitioner (CHTP) and Certified Healing Touch Instructor (CHTI) are only available through Healing Touch International. These credentials and this certifying process have been recognized by the Healing Touch community, health care communities and general public since 1993.

Healing Touch International has not and will not transfer these credentials or this credentialing process to any business, individual or organization. Healing Touch International will maintain the integrity of these credentials and this certification process.

Certified Healing Touch Practitioners
Healing Touch International’s Certified Healing Touch Practitioners can offer their services within their scope of practice and while adhering to Healing Touch International’s published documents Code of Ethics/Standards of Practice and Scope of Practice.

We invite all members, HTI Certified Healing Touch Practitioners and Instructors, along with lay public and friends to attend our annual conference.

Please feel free to use the above factual information to help clarify any confusion of what Healing Touch International does, why they do it, and what they will be doing.

8 Points regarding Healing Touch International

The following are several Brief Facts to assure you that HTI is operating legally and in the highest integrity in providing the HTI Healing Touch Certificate Program. Please come to the HTI Board of Directors and ask your specific questions as we want to connect with you personally to answer any concerns you may have.  We would also like to offer some information below to help clarify a few points.

We are aware that there are conversations in the Healing Touch communities regarding a letter from HTP to the community dated Nov. 9, 2009.   Please be aware that this letter was not sent to Healing Touch International, nor has any direct communication occurred since HTP chose to end its business relationship with HTI in April, 2008. (History to follow.)

HTI was founded in 1996 by Janet Mentgen and continues in its service as the Healing Touch professional non-profit membership organization, working within legal and ethical parameters, supporting students, practitioners, and instructors, as it has for 14 years. Janet Mentgen held the Founder of HTI seat on the HTI Board of Directors until her passing.  She instructed HTI not to create a seat for the Program Director to avoid issues with conflict of interest. The Program Director position was housed in her private business called Colorado Center for Healing Touch. She was clear in her roles.  HTI’s vision is to spread healing, light and love, creating wholeness on earth.  Please join us in this endeavor as we expand the work of Healing Touch out into the world at this time when it is so needed.
  1. Legal
    1. All of the documents related to Healing Touch International origination, teaching, certification and history have been reviewed by legal counsel specializing in and expert in non-profit law. HTI is in legal compliance in its provision of the Healing Touch Certificate Program - the 5 levels of classes and instructor training. Legal counsel has and continues to review all documents related to these issues; HTI and its leaders continue to operate in complete integrity within the highest ethical and legal standards.  The HTI Healing Touch Certificate Program is valid and in complete legal compliance for those who teach, practice or study its contents.

  1. Brief History
    1. Origin - the 5 Levels of Healing Touch classes are called the Healing Touch Certificate Program. This continuing education format was created in AHNA Education Committee in 1989, based on Janet Mentgen's class called Advanced Therapeutic Touch, the work of many healers incorporated into the course, and with contributions from the AHNA Education Committee Members, including the name Healing Touch. The original certificates stated “Certificate of Completion of the AHNA Healing Touch Program” signed by Janet Mentgen as Program Director until 1996. This demonstrates ownership by AHNA and Janet acknowledged this with her signature. These certificates are a matter of public record.

  1. Materials
    1. The original class materials for the Healing Touch Certificate Program, also called Healing Touch Program for short, were loose paper handouts. Mary Jo Bulbrook, in conjunction with Janet Mentgen, later created Healing Touch notebooks for each class level. Mary Jo Bulbrook’s company, North Carolina Center for Healing Touch was the publisher/owner of these notebooks, not Janet.  Janet developed a syllabus and source text book format later, published by Colorado Center for Healing Touch and stopped using the notebooks, so that materials could be easily used in University settings and sent overseas on disk. After her death, the new HTP owners purchased the notebooks from Ms. Bulbrook and revised them. Materials and curriculum framework are different items.

  1. Creation of Healing Touch International
    1. In 1996 HTI was created. The Purpose of HTI - HTI Articles of Incorporation are signed by Janet Mentgen as Founder of HTI. This is the legal document that states the purpose for the creation of HTI and dispels the various reasons given by others. Non profits can not legally be created to support a for–profit business. HTI has been specifically organized and established as a non profit to: (1) Provide continuing education for nurses, health care professionals and others in the energy based therapy of Healing Touch; (2) Promote research of Healing Touch; (3) Provide certification of practitioners and instructors in Healing Touch; (4) Provide community education of energy based therapies.  (*Excerpt from the HTI Articles of Incorporation March 6, 1996 signed by Janet Mentgen. Note: Janet established in the articles of incorporation that one of HTI’s duties was to provide continuing education in the energy based therapy of Healing Touch, not just certification.)

  1. 1996 AHNA Healing Touch Certificate Program and Healing Touch Certification were placed in Healing Touch International (a non-profit corporation).
    1. By law, a non-profit organization can only give assets to another non-profit. AHNA is non-profit, and as such HTI was the recipient of the Healing Touch Certificate Program.   Legally, it could not be placed in Janet's private business called the Colorado Center for Healing Touch, now doing business as Healing Touch Program, Healing Touch Professional Association and Healing Touch Certification.

  1. Curriculum Framework:
    1. Janet Mentgen placed the AHNA Healing Touch Certificate Program Course Description, Course Content and Terminal Objectives for each of the 5 class levels, level 6 and course completion in HTI when it was formed in 1996. Janet then labeled these the HTI Healing Touch Certificate Program and copyright notated to Healing Touch International, 1996. She also attached them to the 1996 and beyond HTI Healing Touch Certification Packets to denote ownership, and stated the importance of this to the HTI Board of Directors.
    2. Multiple varieties of teaching materials have been created over the years to teach to this Curriculum Structure. Material options have been listed in the HTI Instructor Guidelines. Instructors continue to teach as they always have to the HTI Healing Touch Certificate Program curriculum framework although materials and format may vary slightly as it always has.
    3. The HTI Education Committee was created by Janet Mentgen, HTI Founder / President to oversee the HTI Healing Touch Certificate Program Curriculum.  There were several groups offering Approved Courses of Study (ACOS) that included Colorado Center for Healing Touch, universities and hospitals, and HTI Affiliate Countries outside the USA. All these ACOS had to make sure that the curriculum that they were teaching matched the master curriculum framework held in HTI, including Janet’s CCHT classes and materials.  Not all classes were offered through CCHT/HTP.

  1. Certificates of Completion under HTI.
    1. Following the shift from AHNA to HTI in 1996, the new HTI certificates of completion now read, ”Certificate of Completion of the Healing Touch International Healing Touch Program”, signed by Janet Mentgen as Program Director, again faculty for her company.  She placed this in Healing Touch International in 1996 and created the certificates. The original certificates are a matter of record. They were signed by the new and current program director of HTP, also acknowledging HTI’s ownership. The Certificates of Completion were altered without HTI’s permission after Janet’s passing.

  1. AHNA Endorsement - 1997 through present
    1. The HTI Healing Touch Certificate Program, the 5 Levels of classes, has been endorsed by AHNA since 1997. HTI has paid the fee of $5,000 per year for 13 consecutive years. HTI pays this because it owns the HTI Healing Touch Certificate Program.  Janet Mentgen, as Founder/ President of HTI, arranged the AHNA endorsement (license) in 1997. The AHNA endorsement was never in CCHT.

We hope these points have clarified any questions you may have.  Again, please contact the HTI Board of Directors with any additional information you need. This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it , or call 303-989-7982.
