OUTCOMES

The latest research on Healing Touch effectiveness with various measurement instruments and approaches.   More complete information about these studies is available in the Healing Touch International Research Survey. [MORE...]

Healing Touch: A Cost Effectiveness Study.  Mary Beth Lodge, RN, BSN, CHTP

A cost effectiveness study was conducted to assess the overall impact of the inclusion of energy medicine (Healing Touch) and imagery on utilization of benefits and medical costs. It was a thirteen-month study with 440 employees in a self-insured manufacturing company. Healing Touch was included as a benefit available to any employee or dependent covered under the medical benefits plan. There were a total of 38 participants with chronic disease. Overall medical costs were higher during the study year than the previous year. The cost of the study represented on 3% of total medical benefit costs to the company. A co-pay comparable to other outpatient benefits of the medical plan would have reduced this. The company decided to include Healing Touch in its benefit plan with a co-pay after receiving demands for continuation of this service from study participants.

Surface Electromyography (EMG) Apparatus as a Measurement Device for Biofield Research: Results of a Single Case Study.  Mitzi A. Forbes, PhD, RN, CHTP, Ray Rust, PhD, CHPT, and Gerald J. Becker, CHTP

The objective of this study was to determine if surface electromyography (EMG) equipment was capable of detecting electrical signals that can be used in Healing Touch and other biofield therapies to measure outcomes. Resting state data was compared to data collected during a Healing Touch back sequence on one subject. The results indicated that an averaged baseline, "resting state" frequency spectrum was definable. When the HT practitioner attuned with the subject, higher frequency components of the spectrum increased in amplitude, peaked, then decreased throughout the intervention. The conclusion drawn is that the surface EMG apparatus has potential as a measurement device for biofield research.

Electrodermal Testing to Measure the Effect of a Healing Touch Treatment.  Donald C. Stouffer, PhD, D. Kaiser, RN, MBA, CHTP, G. Pitman, DC, and W. Rolf, RN, MSN, CHTP

This study was conducted to determine if the electrical resistance of the acupuncture points could be used to measure the effect of a Healing Touch treatment. This involved passing a tiny current though neural pathways at the acupuncture point on the hands and feet and measuring the electrical resistance. Six trails were conducted to test this hypothesis. Three of the intervention tests were designed to differentiate emotional and relaxation effects. Readings before, during and after the treatment showed dramatic changes in the electrical resistance. In conclusion, it appeared that electrodermal testing by an experienced operator could be used to measure the effect of a bioenergy intervention.

Retrospective Analysis of the Efficacy of Energy Healing in the Student Health Center Setting.  Jude Kehoe, LPN, CHTP and Anne Mattson, MPH, ANP

The study was conducted at the University of Oregon Health Center from 1999-2003. Vital signs were taken before and after 208 sessions of using Healing Touch and/or Energetic Healing. The study showed a decrease in systolic and diastolic blood pressure, respiration, and pulse rate before and after treatment.

Effect of Aspartame on the Human Energy Field.  Donald C. Stouffer, PhD, D. Kaiser, RN, MBA, CHTP, and J. Stouffer

Healing Touch assessment techniques were used to measure the effect of carbonated beverages with and without aspartame on the solar plexus and sacral chakras of 50 healthy people. Initially the chakras were open. After consumption of a carbonated beverage with regular sweetening about 1/3 were open, 1/3 blocked and 1/3 closed. After consumption aspartame sweetened beverage approximately 1/3 were blocked and 2/3 were closed. A possible explanation for this result was postulated as being due to carbon dioxide, a human waste product, and the menthol in aspartame decomposing into formaldehyde.

Preliminary Study: Effect of Healing Touch on Body Fluids.  Don Stouffer, PhD, CHTP, Mary Duennes, RN, CHTP/I, and Greg Pitman, DC

The objective of the study was to determine if Healing Touch treatments would change the properties of the PH, oxidation-reduction balance and electrical resistance in body fluids. The procedure involved collecting saliva and urine samples and making a “biological terrain assessment’ using a computer, which could calculate the properties for blood. A treatment and a control group were used in which the treatment group received full body connection and mindclearing, two Healing Touch techniques.  The other group had the presence of the Certified Healing Touch Practitioner. The chronological age of the participant was 60 years, before Healing Touch treatment the mathematically determined biological age was 62, and after Healing Touch treatment was 49.
