The Effect of Relaxation (Healing Touch) Touch on the Recovery Level of Post-anesthesia Abdominal Hysterectomy Patients,  Maria Adela Concepcion Silva, PhD, RN, CHTI

This study evaluated the effects of Healing Touch on the amount of narcotic analgesic self-administered postoperatively, the frequency of bowel program treatments and medications administered to patients with abdominal hysterectomies. Sixty preoperative patients were randomly assigned to one of three groups: Healing Touch, back massage, and no treatment. The results indicated that the Healing Touch subjects had a significantly higher level of recovery than the two controls on lung, gastro-intestinal, and activity status. Reduction of systolic and diastolic blood pressures and pulse rate were statistically significant for the Healing Touch group and the amount of narcotic analgesia and bowel treatments were less in this group as well.

Wound Care and Complementary Medicine: The Impact of Healing Touch. A Case Study,
Ellen Laffey, HTA, Jeffrey A. Neizgoda, MD, FACHM, FACEP

This case study report chronicles a woman with wound complications following a hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy.  Approximately one week after surgery the patient noted a sudden discharge from her abdominal wound.  The surgeon aspirated the wound twice and the patient was sent for an ultrasound examination, which revealed residual fluid collection.  The patient complained of pain with palpation and a low-grade fever over several days. Healing Touch was instituted after minimal success with standard wound care regimens after 39 days and the patient expressed symptoms of depression and frustration due to lack of progress toward wound healing.  HT techniques included spiral opening, hands in motion/hands still, laser, ultrasound, wound closure and spiral closing. Complete closure was noted 43 days after HT sessions began with the patient verbalizing positive and emotional changes during HT.

A Healing Touch Approach to Scar Integration,
Donald Stouffer, PhD, M. Joyner, and J. Stouffer

It has been observed that a scar can act like a battery and develop a 1.5 volt differential across the scar tissue. This can send a tiny voltage throughout the body and produce many physical dysfunctions. Healing Touch may promote scar integration by neutralizing the electrical properties of scar tissue.

Healing Touch as a Nursing Intervention: Wound Infection Following Cesarean Birth an Anecdotal Case Study,
Wendy Wetzel, MSN, RN, FNP

This study documents the progress of a patient with a significant wound infection as a consequence of cesarean birth. Along with standard medical care, the patient received Healing Touch treatments. This anecdotal study chronicled how Healing Touch, when used in conjunction with traditional medical care, has the potential to increase the rate of wound healing.
