PSYCHOTHERAPY/PSYCHOLOGY/MENTAL DISABILITY The latest research on Healing Touch to assist with depression, alcohol recovery, post tramatic stress disorder, domestic violence, and mental health. More complete information about these studies is available in the Healing Touch International Research Survey. [MORE...] Emerging From Depression: The Experiential Process of Healing Touch, Rosalie Van Aken, PhD, CHTI The study provides information about the experience of 17 participants with moderate depression in addition to providing a middle range theory to explain the process of recovery from depression. The grounded theory analysis uncovered the basic psychosocial problem, the stages of the process of emergence from depression and the strategies used within that process. The process of Healing Touch sessions, for people with moderate depression, occurs in four stages. The first two stages partially address the basic psychosocial problem of disconnection from self, others and the world. The third stage, accessing inner strength and resources, allows the experience of feeling heartened, healing, acceptance and having clarity. In the final stage the person begins engaging with life, with the experiences of the ability to be involved, look outside, being motivated and embracing change. The Effects of Healing Touch on Depression, Cathy Bradway, RN, MSN, CS, CHTP Thirty individuals recruited from psychotherapist’s offices who had a moderate or severe range of depression were divided into two groups. The results of the study showed participants who received Healing Touch treatments were significantly less depressed after the three-week treatment period than participants in the control group who received no treatment. The treatment group had their level of depression retested one month after completion of their sessions and continued to be less depressed than before they began the study. The author speculated that specific techniques may not be what relieves the symptomatology but rather the purity of love and intent of the healer acts to heal the original wound. The Effects of Healing Touch on In Patients Going Through Stage I Recovery from Alcoholism, Sr. Rita Jean DuBrey, CSJ, RN, MSN, CHTP/I The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of Healing Touch in promoting stress reduction in persons in early stage recovery from alcoholism. 148 consecutive patients admitted to an alcoholism unit were randomized to Healing Touch or The Big Book. Compared to the control group, patients receiving Healing Touch had a greater reduction in heart rate and were happier, more satisfied, and had a greater reduction in pain. The Healing Touch group had a greater reduction in feeling upset, less pain, was less tense, and felt calmer at the next measurement. Healing Touch reduced some areas of stress in the early stages of recovery in patients admitted for alcoholism treatment and that it maybe of benefit when providing therapy for the treatment of alcoholism in rehabilitation units. This multi-disciplinary project included training and certification of personnel in charge of the healing intervention and identification of abused women through the Abused Women Registry in the Metropolitan Area of Monterrey. The second phase included the assessment of selected abused women. The third phase included the administration of two Healing Touch techniques to the treatment group. The fourth phase included assessment of treatment outcomes (assessment of client adherence to treatment and severity of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder symptoms after treatment) which occurred after 10 session of treatment. Results support Healing Touch as an effective complementary therapy for abused women. Clinic personnel, participants, and practitioners were receptive to the modality. The study found that energy work and counseling complement each other and facilitate healing. Qualitative analysis was done with seven informants who are nurse practitioners or social workers. The data describe the effects of the healing work in creating a connection with the client and how it aids clients’ access to their emotional material faster, which is often revealed when working on the presenting physical symptoms. The paper also explores how it helps clients more readily integrate the work of a talk therapy session. The healers described how they use the healing work to open sessions and teach clients and /or their supporters in order to continue the support in their lives. Integrative Self Care Strategies for Mental Health: A Wellness Project, Frances Williams, RN, MS, CHTP, Carol Metral, RN, CHTP Based on the philosophy that self responsibility fosters increase health, harmonious human relations, and productive social roles with people who have severe and persistent mental illness, a wellness project was introduced into a mental health facility. Thirty program participants with multiple somatic issues including obesity, sleep disorders, migraines, etc., and the mental health disorders of schizaffective disorder, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and major depressive disorder were included. A self assessment tool was used that included the reason for seeking the experience, symptom most present that day (anger, anxiety, confusion, depression, pain, stress, or other). There were 360 Healing Touch sessions given, 80 massages, and 10 acupuncture treatments. The three most given reasons for attending the practice session were to promote health and wellness, relieve pain, and promote relaxation. The most frequent evaluative comments were pain relief, relaxation, peaceful, feel better, and gratitude. Overall, the participants were actively involved and reported increased use of self health care practices and increased sense of wellbeing. In this dissertation research a multi-faceted eight-session case study examined the use of Spiritual-Energetic Psychotherapy from Myss’ theoretical system (medical intuition). Included in the case study were energetic assessments of the client, treatment modalities used, and assessment and results based upon Myss’ theories and the clinician’s interpretive evaluation. The active participation of the client as well as her relationship to the divine and to her spiritual guides on the inner plane was integral to her healing.
